DEBRIEF
Thank you for taking part in this study, which investigates the
extent to which different grammatical constructions, like active or
passive voice sentences, influence
the ways in which people take perspectives when describing the
actions of others. To do this, we asked you to describe interactions
between people using phrases provided, which required you to mention
one person before the other and consequently choose their
perspective. For example, in the “arguing” scenes, the perspective
of Person A has been taken in the following sentence structure, as
this is who has been mentioned first:
Person A is arguing with Person B.
We are interested in whether people are more likely to describe the
scene from the perspective of the person who was most like them,
e.g. men taking the perspective of the man in the photograph when
the scene depicts a man and a woman, white people taking the
perspective of the white person in the photograph over the black
person, etc.
We are also interested in how attitudes towards same-gender relationships
and same-race relationships might influence behaviour on this task.
