DEBRIEFING FORM

‘Gender biases in language use’

Thank you for your participation in this research study. For this study, it was important that we withheld information about certain aspects of the experiment. Now that your participation is completed, we will fully disclose the information to you, why it was important, answer any of your questions, and provide you with the opportunity to make a decision on whether you would like to have your data included in this study.

What you should know about this study
Our study was investigating the social biases that influence our use of language in describing events. We asked participants to formulate sentences in which people of different genders were taking part in a certain transitive event. We were interested in whether, when participants produced sentences, they were more likely to place one or the other gender as the subject or agent in the sentence. We also wanted to know if such a bias varied based on the form of the sentence (e.g., an active versus a passive sentence). We did not tell you this in advance, based on the possibility that you might consciously avoid mentioning one gender first, or consciously choose to mention a particular gender first.

Right to withdraw data
You may choose to withdraw the data you provided prior to debriefing, without penalty or loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled.
